“My research is devoted to the dialogue between Confucianism and Christianity and the comparative studies among Chinese, Japanese and Continental philosophies, in particular the implications of Kierkegaard\u2019s philosophy and theology in East Asian philosophy of culture and the indigenisation of Chinese Christianity. I also work on philosophy and theology education targeting public audience and church congregations with emphasis on overcoming the conflicts between traditional Chinese culture and Christian faith.”<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Summary:<\/b><\/p>\n

This book aims to apply Japanese philosopher Watsuji Tetsuro\u2019s (1889-1960) study of <\/span>Fudo<\/span><\/i> to examine the emergence of cultural consciousness in Hong Kong and Macao, which were also colonized by British and Portuguese respectively. According to Watsuji, cultures are interactions between <\/span>Fudo<\/span><\/i> (climate and land) and <\/span>ningen<\/span><\/i> (human society). He divided <\/span>Fudo<\/span><\/i> into three types: monsoon, desert and meadow. While Watsuji had visited Shanghai and Hong Kong in 1927, due to his limited knowledge in geography and history, Watsuji fails to acknowledge the cultural and climatic diversity of China and the impacts of colonial histories on Hong Kong and Macao cultures. By modifying Watsuji\u2019s study of <\/span>Fudo<\/span><\/i> with the help of latest studies in cultural anthropology and geography, this research provides a new philosophical methodology to the research on Hong Kong and Macao cultural subjectivities.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
